Fresh Perspectives – Ying Yueh Chuang

  • I had my first one on one with Ying Yueh today – and we picked up right in the middle as if she’d been here all along.  It was a massive yet challenging infusion of new ideas and ways of thinking.  Her main message is that I need to find a way of solving the structural challenges of how the sculptures are going to come together – really work on a small scale and fast, sooner rather than later – do experiment with glaze on the side, but get to a resolution soon.  I totally agree – and it’s been stressing me out. I feel like I’m spinning in a lot of directions and need to be tethered down – ironically, I want my sculpture to be floating – the opposite of tethered.

We talked about the structure – metal “cage” idea of the body – and I am going to move forward with this at the same time explore other ways of pulling it all together at the bottom/base.

Ying Yueh validated my belief that it’s important to keep with the energy of the throwing lines.  She suggested that I research Dale Chihuly – and I find that there’s something quite amazing and akin to the essence of where I want to go in this one work.

She also validated what Robin Hopper said to me this morning – which was – if I want to build big and fragile, I have to look at a stoneware clay body that will vitrify and have some strength.  Onwards and upwards…
